Digital Fabrication: Jones House
Occasionally, a seemingly straightforward renovation can take on a life of its own, but rarely does the design team get to control the evolution. Not the case with this private residence installation. During a rather routine interior renovation, our client asked us to come up with a way for the house to feel more updated and contemporary than its unfortunate early 80’s conception.
This is the design of a permanent installation into a residence in Charlotte, NC. The installation was constructed of birch veneer plywood and designed and constructed by students and faculty in the Digital Design Center in conjunction with local firm Happy Box Architecture. The design was formulated as a way to create a more fluid connection through the house and to connect the distinct environments of the house with a single piece. In each room the installation served different purposes, as a frame for the hearth and Media center, as a headboard in the bedroom and as shelving in the kitchen.
